How to record a bug report video developers can actually use

A short screen recording beats three paragraphs of "it doesn't work". But a rambling 6-minute video is almost as bad. Here is a structure that gets bugs fixed, and a ticket template to paste with it.

The 60-second structure

  1. Context (5 s): "On the billing page, logged in as an admin…"
  2. Steps (30 s): do them slowly and say each one out loud.
  3. The bug (10 s): stop on it. "I expected X, I got Y."
  4. Evidence (15 s): console error, network request or a second attempt that shows it's repeatable.

Before you hit record

Recording it with Bobbin

  1. Click the Bobbin icon → Record screen, window or tab.
  2. Tick Microphone so you can narrate. Turn the webcam bubble off: nobody needs your face on a bug report.
  3. Press Start recording and choose the Chrome tab with the bug. A tab recording shows only that page, so notifications, other tabs and your desktop stay out of it. (For a desktop app, choose Window.)
  4. Run the steps. If you fumble, press Discard and start again; there's no limit on takes.
  5. Stop with Alt+Shift+S and press Download. You now have an MP4 to attach.

For bug reports: Microphone on, webcam bubble off, then share just the tab.

Why a file instead of a link? Links to third-party video hosts expire, need logins, or leak internal screens outside your company. A file attached to the ticket stays with the ticket, under the same access rules.

What to say while recording

Ticket template (copy and paste)

**Summary:** [What's wrong, in one line] **Video:** attached (bug at 0:40) **Steps to reproduce** 1. Go to … 2. Click … 3. … **Expected:** … **Actual:** … **Environment:** [Browser + version, OS, account/role, URL, time it happened (with time zone)] **Frequency:** Every time / Sometimes (3 out of 5) / Once **Console/network errors:** [paste the text, not just a screenshot]

Always paste error messages as text too. Text is searchable; video isn't.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a bug report video be?

Usually 30 to 90 seconds: a few seconds of context, the steps, the bug, and any error. If it needs longer, the steps are probably two separate bugs.

Should I record the whole screen or just the tab?

Just the tab (or the app window) in most cases. It keeps notifications and other private windows out of the video and makes the file smaller.

Can I attach a screen recording to Jira or GitHub?

Yes. Download the MP4 from Bobbin and attach it like any file. Check your tracker's size limit; for larger files, share a link from your team's drive instead.

Do I need to show my face in a bug report?

No. Turn the webcam bubble off and narrate with your microphone. It also keeps the file smaller.

Is it safe to record internal tools?

With Bobbin, the recording is saved only on your computer and never uploaded. You decide where it goes. Still avoid recording real customer data when you can use test data.
